The 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar is all set to become the country’s first shopping district in India to be IoT (Internet of Things)-enabled.

As many as 30 stores in the area such as the likes of Avirate, Celio, Guess, Jack & Jones, Kazo, Lee, Vans, Vero Moda, Wrangler to name a few, have been onboarded for a project that aims to “converge the physical and digital world.”

The term IoT refers to a network of physical objects with IP addresses for connectivity between these objects as well as other Internet-enabled systems.

Mobmerry app

The retailers will use an app called Mobmerry that connects retailers to consumers in real-time giving them notifications about new products, deals and discounts in the consumers’ immediate area.

The aim is to bring the retail stores to consumers’ phones thereby driving consumers to the store through target marketing using geo-location, said a release from Interaction One, a Bengaluru-based start-up that devised the app.

This technology is made possible with the use of bluetooth low energy (BLE) applications, known as beacons that is being widely used to provide IoT connectivity throughout the world. As many as 300 such beacons are set to be deployed.

At a time when the burgeoning e-commerce sector is adversely affecting brick and mortar setups, physical retail stores are sure to welcome the move.

Vipul Mathur, Head Marketing, Lee, said, “As consumers today are embracing technology like never before, especially with their mobile phones becoming an integral extension of themselves, it’s imperative for the physical retail environment to adapt to this change. We need to constantly experiment and see how we can use this technology to our added advantage – be it in a more focused targeted communication, creating more meaningful experiences, read consumer behaviour with sharper analytics, manage our inventories better – the possibilities are endless.”

The app will allow shoppers to virtually explore their city and trigger personalised offers, products and food recommendations in real-time. It is an easy-to-use interface with technology and design beautifully integrated to provide a seamless experience for the user, said the release.

Live marketing feeds
A merchant can effortlessly showcase his products with just the touch of a button and has been provided with a facility to push live marketing feeds directed to a specific target audience. The app alerts the retailer of the customer’s basic details and preferences as soon as the customer walks into the store, the release said.
