Out-of-the-box menu

Comfort calling

This new cafe on the block is a quirky one. The sun guard of the eatery makes it look like an ice-cream parlour while the interiors offer the warm aroma of home. Paintings, funny photo-frames and junk jewellery, which are on sale here, occupy much of the wall space.

This, along with the large planter boxes inside, make the place look like an artistic house combined with an Italian Bistro. Maybe this is why the owners, Anupam and Vishal, thought it was best to name their cafe, with multiple identities, ‘What’s In A Name’.

Located in  HSR Layout, ‘What’s In A Name’ is just about three months old but has a number of customers feasting on their ‘atta chicken’. The owners don’t limit themselves when it comes to creativity.

Their ‘menu’ is not fixed and ranges from ‘Continental’ and ‘Mughlai’ to short-eats. “This is why we don’t have a menu. Our items are written all over the blackboard and change every weekend. The intimate space proves as a fine ground for interaction as well. When
children come in, we give them chalk pieces  to draw on our tissue boxes, so that keeps them engaged,” says Anupam.

Options such as ‘omelette pakoda’, ‘chicken bharta’ and ‘keema kaleji’ are quite popular while crispy prawn, ‘mirchi bajji’, and ‘hara bhara kebab’ don’t fail to disappoint. Their sparkling virgin ‘mojito’ acts as a wonderful welcome drink. ‘

Paneer sheekhampuri’, stuffed with ‘malai’, is a perfect blend of ‘paneer’ and cream, and the spicy green ‘chutney’ bursts out with flavours. Desserts such as ‘red velvet cake and tiramisu’ and ‘basundi with ‘moti chur laddoo’ are right for the sweet-toothed and come in cute little jars.

Apart from pampering their taste buds, the customers can also enjoy the waft of nostalgia through the majestic gramophone and old-style telephone which Anupam picked up while shopping for the cafe.

Anupam says, “We just like to serve homely, comfort food. Every item is prepared fresh and we serve our dishes in a minimum of 20 minutes. We decided to start our restaurant in HSR Layout as we felt that the area has a lot of potential for growth. By next year, we hope to expand to various other areas and add new and interestingdishes to the menu.”
So apart from food and affordable artwork, ‘What’s In A Name’, is bound to sell great experience. The cafe is located at HSR Layout, Sector 2, near Parangipalaya bus stop.
