MLA's supporters in late-night brawl

Over a dozen men were injured in a scuffle between supporters of Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Narela Sharad Chauhan and members of a marriage procession in outer Delhi’s Alipur late on Monday, police said. No case has been filed as no complaint has been made so far.

It comes a day after an AAP MLA was booked for allegedly misbehaving with a Delhi Police officer on duty in Rohtas Nagar. Rohtas Nagar’s Sarita Singh denies the charge.

According to police, the incident in Alipur occurred when the MLA was returning home from another wedding ceremony. It is alleged that a group of men were consuming alcohol in front of Chauhan’s house in Bakoli village.

“It was because of an argument over right of way outside the MLA’s house. Chauhan’s staff was allegedly attacked when they asked the marriage party to clear the road,” said Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).

The other side has accused the MLA of instigating his supporters to go on a rampage and even disrupt the wedding ceremony.

A call was made to the police control room after which the injured were taken to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chander Hospital. Police have received the medical examination reports, but the injured refused to get their statement recorded.

On Tuesday, a team from Alipur police station met Chauhan during which the MLA claimed that his supporters had to step in to save him.

“Chauhan says the men turned violent when his driver tried to drive through beeping the vehicle’s horn. The windshield of the car was also damaged by them,” said another police officer.

The men then stood in front of the car and refused to give way. “They even tried to overpower the driver and thrash him. But Chauhan’s supporters gathered at the spot.”
The other side claims that due to the incident, the rituals of the wedding ceremony was performed behind closed doors instead of the scheduled spot at the venue.

“It is alleged that Chauhan’s supporters went to the venue after the incident and damaged property. Nobody was hurt at the venue,” the officer said.
