Three heavily-armed militants today stormed an Army camp in Tanghdar near the Line of Control, about 160 kms from here, triggering a fierce gunfight in which all the attackers were killed along with a civilian.

The militants attacked from the rear side of the camp at 6.15 AM, which resulted in few vehicles catching fire, defence sources said.

"There was a stand off fire from Kalsuri Ridge (in Tangdhar sector) towards an army camp this morning," the official said.

After about seven hours of intense gunbattle, Army said all the three militants involved in the attack were killed. One civilian also lost his life in the incident, Army said.

The militants were heavily-armed as they used small fire arms and UBGLs to carry out the attack.

SSP Kupwara Ijaz Ahmad said the three militants had entered the camp.

Tangdhar sector is close to the LoC in Kupwara district and has been used as an infiltration route in the past.

A soldier was also injured in the incident, an official said. Three AK assault rifles along with ammunition were recovered from slain ultras, he said.

The operation in the area was still continuing and further details are awaited, the official said. Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. In a telephonic call to a local news agency, a person claiming to be Jaish spokesman said three of its cadres carried out the attack.

Officials said it was not yet clear whether the attackers were a part of an infiltrating group. "That is a matter of investigation," an official said.
