A day after the burglary at the ancestral house-turned-memorial of the poet laureate Kuvempu at Kuppalli in Thirthahalli taluk of the district, the situation returned to normal with the visitors thronging the memorial, on Wednesday, as usual.

Kadidal Prakash, assistant secretary, Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Pratishtana told Deccan Herald, “Over 200 people, including students, visited the memorial on Wednesday. They spent quality time here. It was a good response from people. Generally, the number of visitors would be more than 500 during holidays or weekends. During the weekdays, the number hovers around 200. So, it is evident that the burglary incident did not deter people from visiting the birthplace of Kuvempu, the first Kannada poet to receive the coveted Jnanpith award. For the first time since its inception in 2001, the memorial was closed for the visitors on November 24.”

Prakash said that the police have taken surveillance cameras into their custody for the investigation. “We have asked our staff to instal other surveillance cameras in the memorial for the time being. Police are likely to return them in two days.” The Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Pratishtana president Hampa Nagarajaiah and his wife Kamala Hampana visited the place on Wednesday.

The thief struck the memorial on interveneing period between Monday night (Nov 23) and Tuesday morning and made away with Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan awards conferred on Kuvempu.

Probe intensified

Superintendent of Police Ravi D Channannavar said, “Teams have been sent to the neighbouring districts like Chikkamagaluru and Davangere to trace the accused. Police are also visiting Devangi, Gadikallu villages close to Kuppalli. The accused is not a professional burglar. He appears to be an ordinary thief. ”
