BJP seeks judicial probe into violence over Tipu Jayanti

BJP members in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday vociferously sought a judicial probe that marred the Tipu Sultan Jayanthi in Madikeri earlier this month and also demanded that the State henceforth stop sponsoring the birth anniversary of the 18th century Mysuru ruler.

The discussion witnessed heated arguments between the members of the BJP and the ruling Congress. Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa had to intervene several times to prevent a few members from continuing with their speeches which had communal overtones.

Leader of the Opposition

Jagadish Shettar, who raised the issue during a discussion on law and order in the State, charged the government with indulging in vote bank politics by organising Tipu Jayanthi. “The government organised the event despite knowing full well that Tipu Sultan was a controversial person. He (Tipu Sultan) had unleashed terror against Hindus, forced hundreds of people into religious conversion and destroyed several temples,” he said.

The government’s decision to organise the jayanthi enraged people in Kodagu, where Tipu had killed more than 40,000 people, Shettar said.

Tanveer Sait (Cong) raised objections to Shettar’s remarks and said no historical document related to the Tipu Sultan period mentioned about him as having forced people into religious conversion or destroying temples.

Other Congress members, including U T Khader, Shivamurthy Naik, N A Haris and M K Somashekar, accused the BJP of indulging in communal politics and dividing people.

K G Bopaiah (BJP) said the violence in Madikeri was premeditated. Hundreds of people from Kerala had arrived on the day with the sole intention of disrupting law and
order.

While the government had come to the conclusion that local VHP functionary D S Puttappa had died due to an accident on the sidelines of the violence on November 10 in Madikeri, a full- fledged investigation had been launched into the death of a youth from the minority community who succumbed to gunshot wounds the same day.

“Why this double standard. The present inquiry by the Mysuru Deputy Commissioner into the violent incidents is going nowhere. Order an judicial inquiry immediately,” Bopaiah demanded.

Earlier, Shettar said the law and order had completely collapsed in the State ever since the Congress came to power. Women and child have become unsafe and illegal sand mining is rampant. Incidents of chain-snatching have increased. So much so that even police officers are being murdered, he said.
