City to get 2,260 new bus shelters

People wait in sun and rain as shelters are built at wrong places

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is planning to construct as many as 2,260 shelters across the City in the next few months.

The City needs new bus stops as most of the existing ones are constructed at wrong places, B C Renukeshwar, Chief Traffic Manager (Operations), BMTC, told Deccan Herald.
“A recent survey carried out by the BMTC and BBMP has revealed that bus stops in the City are not scientifically planned. We have many bus stops but a good number of them have been constructed in the wrong places and people are forced to wait in the rain and hot sun,” he said.

As part of the project, old bus stops will be demolished and built at new locations. Further, new bus stops will also be constructed from scratch at busy junctions. These bus stops will be spread over main roads as well as interior areas.

The BMTC and BBMP have jointly surveyed different parts of the City to identify places where new bus stops can be constructed and where old ones can be demolished. On the basis of the survey, BMTC has stated that the City needs more than 2,000 bus shelters. For instance, the bus stops opposite Chinnaswamy Stadium, towards Queen’s Road and near Victoria Statue are often deserted.

Further, near Kamaraj Road, very close to Brigade Road, there is no bus shelter. “We wait at the bus stand here every day. But there is no shelter for us to escape the heat or rain. I hope BMTC will take urgent action to construct a new one soon,” a commuter said.
When asked who was responsible for wrong location of bus stops, the BMTC official said that it was not a question of blaming any agency but of taking responsibility.
