As garbage menace rears its ugly head in the City again, BBMP has been trying different ways to woo residents to garbage segregation. Corporators in a couple of wards have also come forward to distribute dustbins free of cost.

In Subramanyanagar, Gayathrinagar, Ganesha Mandira areas, dustbins are being distributed to households free of cost with pamphlets having instructions on garbage segregation. The corporators have said that garbage will not be collected if it is not segregated and that it will be dumped in front of their houses.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Lakshmi Umesh, councillor, Ganesha Mandira ward in Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituency, said that dustbins were distributed to as many as 1,000 households on Wednesday. The target, she said, was to cover 4,000 houses in all.

Two dustbins each, aqua blue colour for wet waste and red for dry waste, were given to the residents. Hemachandra, joint commissioner, BBMP South, said that this apart, an information, education and communication campaign is being undertaken.

“We tried to reach out to them through various methods. When they failed to segregate the garbage, we put it right in front of them and the pourakarmikas segregated it,” he said.

A similar campaign is due to take place on Sunday in Subramanyanagar area where free dustbins will be distributed to residents to get them to segregate the garbage.

Lakshminarasaiah, joint commissioner of West zone, said that following this, wet garbage would be collected everyday while dry waste would be collected twice a week. This would be done in a phased manner.

H Manjunath, councillor, Subramanyanagar said that he had taken up the initiative out of his own interest.

“We will distribute the bins to houses in Subramanyanagar, Gayathrinagar and Milk Colony areas. In all, 7,500 households will be given two dustbins each,” he said. The rider is that the residents must refrain from using plastic covers to line the inside of the dustbins.

In Rajarajeshwarinagar (RR Nagar) zone too, the campaign to segregate waste has been intensified.

Dr Veerabhadrappa B, joint commissioner, RR Nagar zone, said that 10 lakh pamphlets have been distributed to residents on waste segregation. This apart, brochures and pamphlets are being inserted in diaries of schoolchildren so that parents can take note.
