2 from Bhatkal recruited by IS: Home minister

The Karnataka police has learnt that two people from Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada were radicalised and recruited by the Islamic State (IS).

In his reply to the Legislative Council on law and order situation in the State, Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Friday that a 34-year-old resident of Bhatkal has been arrested by the Dubai police, while the whereabouts of another 40- year-old male from the same taluk, is yet to be ascertained, he added.

The Dubai police arrested Adnan Hassan Damudi, 34, a month ago.
His brother Mohammed Naip and father Mohammed Hassan Damudi have confirmed arrest to the State police.

Damudi is learnt to have recruited four persons from Telangana to IS. A BCom graduate from Anjuman educational institution, he was working in Dubai World Trade Center since 2012 as delivery coordinator. His father was running a realty business in Dubai.

In the second instance, information pertaining to the whereabouts of Sultan Abdul Khader Amrar, 40, said to be involved in terror activities, is yet to be ascertained. Khader hails from Karagadde village in Bhatkal.

According to intelligence reports, Khader got married when he was in Bhatkal, but details about his wife are not known.

He left Bhatkal in 2008, and has not returned since then even after the death of his father, Hussian Sabeer Amrar.

Though his father is learnt to have told the media that his son was dead, there has been no confirmation about it.

Parameshwara said that the department was taking all measures to ensure that IS is kept at bay.

Checkposts across the borders of Uttara Kannada have been strengthened.
