Alarming rise in dust levels after rains

Bikers, pedestrians worst hit
Last Updated 28 November 2015, 19:14 IST

The rise in dust levels combined with other air pollutants, especially after the rains have receded, is making life hell for pedestrians and commuters across the City.

Two-wheeler riders remain the worst hit as dust particulate matter, mainly arising from construction debris, quarry dust and sand, hangs in the air, sometimes blowing violently in the direction of vehicles.

“There is so much dust in the air that riding my two-wheeler has become a major challenge after the BBMP filled most potholes with construction materials, sand and gravel stones. After cars and buses pass through these spots, all the sand particles fly around.

Pillion riders, especially women and children are the worst affected. Surgical masks are also of no help in this scenario,” said Sakshi Khare, a college student.

“Another reason for dust is unswept roads. Sweepers have not been sweeping the roads and footpaths since the past 2 to 3 months. Sand has piled up after rains and it flies in the direction of wind or when vehicles move,” said Vandita V, a resident of KR Puram.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Ramachandra, chairman, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), said the KSPCB officials have taken note of the situation.

“When potholes are filled with sand and loose materials, they tend to scatter as vehicles move around. This leads to an increase in the toxin levels in the air. During rains, dust particulate matter settles down  and hence pollution levels are comparatively low. Now that rains have receded, there has been a rise in dust levels along with other air pollutants,” he said.

He said pollution levels were being monitored through stationed and mobile vehicles and a detailed report on the phenomenon would be prepared shortly.
