A 25-year-old woman was killed after being kidnapped from her house in north-west Delhi’s Mukundpur in the wee hours of Saturday.

Her body was found in a semi-nude condition after almost 12 hours near Bhalswa Dairy police station. It is suspected that she was murdered after being sexually assaulted, but police are waiting for the post-mortem report.

“The initial probe hints that the woman was strangled. There were several injury marks on the body,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Vijay Singh.

The woman, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district, had a diploma in fashion designing from Allahabad. She lived with her parents, while her elder brother is settled in Abu Dhabi.

The woman’s cousin brother told Deccan Herald that she was alone at the house for the past three days. “Her parents had gone to their native village to cast their votes in a local election,” the relative said.

It is alleged that two men barged into the house at around 3 am. “She was dragged outside. Hearing the commotion, neighbours and locals gathered there, but the assailants managed to flee,” the relative added. The house was ransacked, but robbery has almost been ruled out. It is also suspected that the woman was drugged before being kidnapped.

The family’s neighbours informed her parents, who asked their relatives to approach police. Police were informed, but they failed to locate the woman. Her mobile phone was also found switched off.

At 5 pm, a call was made to the police control room reporting a woman’s body lying in a forested area near Bhalswa Dairy police station. A police team went to the spot and found the body in a semi-nude condition. The relatives of the missing woman identified the body. The spot was around a kilometre away from her house.

“Prima facie circumstances suggest that the woman was sexually assaulted, murdered and the body was later dumped there,” said another police officer.

A case under the Indian Penal Code has been registered with Bhalswa Dairy police station. The team investigating the murder hopes to track down the killer with the help of DNA profiling and fingerprints. “Criminals from Delhi, Mau and Allahabad will be under the scanner,” the officer added.

They are also looking into the case as an attack by a jilted lover. CCTV footage of nearby areas are being looked at to gather more clues about the accused. The body has been preserved for post-mortem, which will be conducted after her brother arrives in the capital. Her parents returned home late on Saturday.
