There seems to be some relief for motorists whose stress levels go up a few notches when they ride on Old Madras Road where traffic jams are the order of the day.

.
The traffic police have now banned parking of all kinds of vehicles except BMTC buses at the entrance of the KR Puram cable-stayed bridge near Tin Factory Junction on Old Madras Road to decongest the busy stretch.

“There are long traffic jams at this particular spot, sometimes till late night. After a survey of the traffic density we found that the main cause for the traffic jam was the stopping of buses near the entrance of the flyover. These buses coming from Old Madras Road and going towards KR Puram pull in right at the entrance of the flyover to pick up passengers. They do not move for long resulting in traffic chaos. So, we have deployed our personnel to make sure no vehicles other than BMTC buses stop at that particular point,” C K Baba, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-East), told Deccan Herald.

KSRTC buses will be allowed only for a few days. The KSRTC bus stop will be later shifted to the service road next to the ITI gate. A senior traffic police officer said the KSRTC had been requested not to make the spot a boarding point for passengers. “KSRTC officials have asked for some time, saying passengers who booked tickets earlier will face problems. Once everything is set right, they will shift the bus stop next to the ITI gate,” he said.

Police have put up banners near the bridge to make the public aware that private buses would not stop there. The traffic police also met the local MLA and corporators who have agreed to co-operate in the shifting of the KSRTC bus stop.

“Right now, there is a single bus stop near the ITI gate and a few more bus shelters will be added. After a couple of weeks, we will start penalising the drivers if they are found pulling in near the entrance of the flyover. After a month, we will start confiscating the vehicles,” the official added.

Baba said traffic policemen would ensure the plan was enforced strictly and there was smooth flow of traffic. “I’m told that a few local people tried to cause a ruckus by confronting the traffic police and asked them not to implement these rules. So, we have sought help from the law and order police to handle this situation,” he added.
