Skywalk with ease over busy Bangalore streets
G Manjusainath, Bangalore, Feb 9, DHNS::

Here is help at last to turn Bangalore’s jay-walkers skywalkers. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is gearing up to install skywalks with escalators at busy 12 intersections across the City.

Palike sources said the dozen locations, where heavy traffic flow cause inconvenience to pedestrians and where jaywalking is the order, have been chosen for installation of the skywalks. The spots that the BBMP has identified are Christ College, Commercial Street, Devaraj Urs Road, Himalaya Theatre, Lashkar Road Forum, MS Building, Richmond Road, Shivananda Circle near Desai Hospital, SMS Railway Junction, Subramanyanagar Police Station, Webb Junction near MG Road and Rajaram Mohan Roy Road.

Each skywalk, to which escalators will be rigged, is expected to cost anywhere between Rs 70-75 lakh. A short-term tender notification was issued on Janaury 13, two days before the BBMP election code of conduct came into effect. Once the civic polls were cancelled, the BBMP reinitiated the tender awarding process which is now in the finalisation stage, Palike sources said. Once awarded, the contract will remain effective for 20 years.

The escalators would be constructed on a Design, Build, Own, Operate and Transfer basis, but users will not have to pay a paisa. The prime source of income for the skywalk developers will be advertisement rights. The BBMP will earn Rs 65 lakh annually as part of the revenue sharing deal with the contractors.

Sources said the skywalks will be fitted with aesthetically designed capsule lifts and ramps. A combination of lifts and staircases will help pedestrians use the skywalks wherever ramps are not built.

The project is part of the  BBMP’s attempt to make the City roads safer not only for senior citizens but also as a measure to curb jaywalking.

2 skywalks are needed on OMR - one infront of KR Pura Rly Stn and the other at Tin Factory. These 2 places are a nightmare.

Mr Ram. You are absolutely correct. But the above areas are not falling under Bangalore City Corporation limits but are falling under "No cauvery Water / No drainage" areas. No body is bothered for those ares.

Good theory. What about electricity? when there is no electricity even for residential usage how is this going to work? It will be full of beggers sitting on either side in 2 minutes. Just watch. Instead just do roundbaouts and make rules and keep police to monitor traffic and clear the traffic and pedestrians fast. Not everyone especially elderly can walk using them. BBMP needs to get out its ivory tower

Instead of wasting money on skywalks ,let them build urinals since most the public places has become Public urinals in Bangalore .First of all BBMP is wasting the money collected from the public on SAS are being squandered with out cleaning the storm water drains which are lying unattended and to cite few examples Koramangala Opposite Total Mall, JC road cross,Mysore Road. There is no road cleaning is taking place in Kanakpura median area so much of accumulation dust and sand which are not cleared for years together. What far people have to pay SAS tax if the money has not been spent on public health and sanitation. Two wheelers are unable to drive due to pot hole all over the road ,sand accumulation which no one bother to attend. If you start any construction ,local Junior Engineer is there to collect his share of booty .Are we here to pay only salary of the Corporation Staff. Government is not taking anything on that count.Local Administration should be handled by some other agency other than corporation .Look at other states like Tamilnad. They have given the contract to outside agencies who will take care of everything why not practice the same situation.Place like chennai is better maintained by outsourcing agencies.Let wisdom preavails.

Bye Bye. you have lost your marbles I suppose. Hardly a fraction of the tax collected from the city is spent on the infrastructure.
