Coffee plantations in Karnataka play a huge role in driving the local economy, Karnataka Chief Secretary Arvind Jadhav said, adding that the green vistas have about five lakh people working in them every day.

Addressing the annual India Coffee Award Ceremony 2016 here on Thursday, Jadhav said, “Indian coffee is one of the best coffees, when compared with global types, and which is in high demand for blending to create superior coffee.”

Jadhav asserted that the value realisation should be high as Indian coffee is a high-end market product.

India coffee awards

Coffee Board Chairperson Leena Nair said, “In order to recognise and honour the best performance of coffee exporters, the Coffee Board has instituted export awards since 1999-2000. The awards were given for the best exporter of green coffee, specialty coffee, instant coffee and roasted coffee.”

Indian coffee export performance has been good over the past few years touching three lakh metric tonnes annually. Out of the total 538 registered exporters, only 128 exporters actively exported the item during 2013-14.
