Activists clash with Sainiks
Despite the Shiv Sena threat that looms large over Mumbai, a group of social activists dared to take on some Sainiks by marching to Shiv Sena Bhavan at Dadar in Central Mumbai on Thursday.
The march, led by activist Teesta Setalvad, was stopped by a strong police force when it was still some distance away Shiv Sena Bhavan.
A few social activists clashed with the Sainiks who had gathered at the spot, but were dispersed by the police.
Several Sena workers have been detained by the police. Teesta, too, was detained.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said it was for the exhibitors to decide whether to screen the movie or not, although the government has provided maximum security to multiplexes and single-screen threatres.
“It is unfortunate that the police have to guard the cinema halls rather than fight terrorists and Naxals,” Ashok Chavan told reporters, expressing his anguish over the situation brought on by the Shiv Sena. “It is also unfortunate that people in the state were threatened in such a manner,” Chavan said.
