Twenty-one year old Navdeep Singh Dhaliwal and his 19-year old brother, Kawaldeep Singh Dhaliwal were stabbed to death reportedly after a dispute over money at Perth. It is yet to be confirmed whether their killing was the result of racist attack.

The victims had gone to Australia for studies in 2008-09, according to family sources. Hailing from Sunam in Punjab, the two brothers had gone to Australia for studies in 2008-09. Their father, Swarn Singh said the family had no inkling of the impending tragedy till Thursday night.

The Australian police said the deaths were the result of an argument over money. The media there also termed the incident as a dispute between three Indians over money and quoted police as saying they were questioning the Indian who had dispute with the brothers.

Meanwhile, Punjab chief minister P S Badal has urged Prime Minister Manmohan singh to seek diplomatic intervention from the international community against what he called growing incidents of “violent racist attacks against Indians especially Punjabis.”
Badal has announced a grant of 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.

He described the incident as “deeply tragic” and said that despite assurances from the Australian Government and the embassy of Australia in India, such ghastly incidents continued to recur in that country and the government did not seem to have done enough to stop this trail. He urged Manmohan Singh to personally intervene and ask the Australian Government to create a secure environment for Punjabi youth who are making significant contribution for the growth and development of Australia.
