The poignant suicide note left by Rohit Vemula, the Dalit research scholar of Hyderabad Central University, speaks volume of deep rooted prejudices against the socially disadvantaged members of our society despite constitutional protection. And what is even more distressing is that Rohit was not the first to choose to end his life in the campus. Hopefully, it should be the last.
The words “ My birth is my fatal accident” used in his note is a very telling and a sad reflection of how some one like him resigned to blame his own birth for all the pains, though inflicted from outside.
That a sitting Union Minister from the BJP hailing from the state should seek his colleague’s intervention against some of these Dalit scholars’ “ anti-national ” activities betrays his partisan stance.
