Members of the ABVP staged a protest in town on Tuesday against politicising the suicide of researcher Rohith Vemula in the Central University of Hyderabad.

Politicians should not politicise a sensitive issue like a suicide. Instead, they should demand impartial probe and help bring out the truth, said the members.

The protesters said that the Congress and its vice-president Rahul Gandhi are using the suicide of Vemula for political gain.

“Rahul Gandhi is indulging in promoting the politics of caste and vengeance. He should spell out the reasons for politicising the issue. When the government has ordered a judicial probe into the suicide, the Congress is trying to mislead the students,” the ABVP members said. They also asked why the Congress was silent on the suicides of three students in Chennai.

Impartial probe sought
The ABVP leaders said that the suicide of Vemula is being projected as a clash between Dalit and non-Dalit students. There is a need to conduct an impartial probe and provide justice to the family of Vemula, they demanded. The protesters submitted a memorandum to Additional Deputy Commissioner Vaishali on the occasion.
