The Italian platter

Last Updated 05 February 2016, 18:42 IST

Housed in a cosy corner on the first floor of UB City, there is an intimate vibe that prevails in the Italian restaurant ‘Toscano’. With happy green popping out from its interiors, it invites its customers with open arms and offers one a regional Italy experience.

As you step into this place, a smiling waitresss attends to you enquiring about your reservations and if not for that, for your choice of table in its nicely spread outdoor and indoor seating. What adds to the whole Italian feel here is the live, subtle music played with acoustic sounds.

While you are assured of the welcoming ambience, the colourful menu with pictures to support the big list of dishes excites you on what will be coming next, however, with a faint apprehension about the price, as it can be a little more than pocket-friendly. Nevertheless, this factor takes a backseat once you get your order of the authentic Italian platter.

Not categorised as a place to go to at a particular time of the day, one can enjoy their meal or snack and also as the managing director of the place Jean Michelle Schwens puts it, ‘even share a platter’, as they have dishes that can be indulged on at all times — for brunch, supper or dinner. The restaurant is also known to serve authentic wines.

A good place for food connoisseurs, it widely explores Italian cuisine, going beyond popular dishes like pasta, pizza and risotto. These Italian delights here do have an authentic taste. But the place has much more than just these. With equal options for both veg and non-veg lovers, the salads — with flavoursome and authentic Italian ingredients — fall under the must-try category.

If you are an average and a diet-conscious diner, these before-the-meal delectables can even make for your whole meal! To name a few salads offered here, they have ‘goat cheese salad’ with never-ending greens including rucola, fig and beetroot, ‘citrus fruits and feta cheese salad’ with mixed greens, oranges and other fresh fruits and ‘caprese classic’, an Italian classic that is a new addition on their menu. The bruschetta, served on an elaborate platter, stands out from the rest with classic and Mediterranean toppings, and takes on a more crispy base.

The ‘spinach ravioli’ for the main course too will not disappoint one’s taste buds.
The ‘chicken de toscano’, with juicy infused chicken breast, takes a spotlight as one of the best tasting chicken dishes. While ‘chocolate kahlua mousse’ tops their dessert menu, the all-time favourite of dessert lovers, ‘tiramisu’, is not a bad choice either.
