Director: Craig Gillespie

“The Finest Hours” is based on the 1950s real life story about US Coast Guard’s remarkable rescue mission off the New England coast.

Walt Disney Studios brings the story to life with terrifying seas and powerful waves that toss the protagonists around like leaves. The rare and brave deeds of a four-member coast guard crew — Webber (Pine), Ray (Affleck), Ben (Livesey) and Cluff (Bana) — generate enough tension and suspense to leave you on the edge of your seat.

The movie also focuses on life and the hardship that accompanies it. The story is somewhat superficial, but the kind of attention given to life and death situation is noteworthy.

At the outset, “The Finest Hours” feels like you are going to watch another period film with a love story, laced with the common problems of the times; but after it enters the high seas, the survival tale manages to salvage it.

The plot is not as strong as the ocean waves, but the special effects and the cast make a good presentation. It is a fine disaster film centred around heroic acts.
