Thirty-seven people were killed and 20 injured when a Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation bus broke through the concrete walls of a bridge and plunged into a river below.

Information coming from  South Gujarat’s Navsari district, where the accident took place, suggests that the bus carrying about 55-60 people fell from a bridge in to the Poorna river near Supa village, as the driver apparently lost control.

“This is a very serious accident as the railing on the bridge of Purna river is pretty high. The bus has broken through the concrete wall and fallen in to the river. We will eventually ascertain the exact reason for the accident but our immediate task is to provide treatment to the injured,” Gujarat’s minister for surface transport Vijay Rupani told Deccan Herald.

“Looking at the scale, I fear the death toll may climb further,” he added. Though he did not have exact figures of the injured, he confirmed the deaths of 37 people in the accident, adding that the injured have been shifted to local hospitals.
