Will prefer principles over power, says Mehbooba

Taking tough stance, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday indicated that she could end the alliance with the BJP if the Central government fails to announce “confidence-building measures” (CBM) for Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a meeting of the party leaders in Jammu, Mehbooba said there is no question of compromise on principles of her father and former chief minister late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s principles.

“Mufti sahib always preferred principles over power and it will remain a guiding code for us,” she said.

While hinting that the PDP would not hesitate in ending its alliance with the rightwing BJP, if the Center fails to announce CBMs on J&K, Mehbooba said, “My father spent 55 years in politics and he always believed in healthy politics. Therefore, if I have to choose between principle and power then I’ll definitely go for principle.”

She announced that her party will soon launch statewide membership drive. “We will have to strengthen our roots, go to the masses and carry forward Mufti sahib’s mission with renewed vigour, zeal and enthusiasm,” the firebrand PDP chief said.

Mehbooba had earlier told Governor N N Vohra that she will go ahead on government formation with the BJP only after New Delhi initiates Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) on Kashmir.

J&K has been under the Governor’s rule amid rising political uncertainty since former Mufti died on January 7, leaving behind a rocky coalition of ideologically-divergent partners.

This was Mehbooba’s first address to PDP workers after her father’s demise. The meeting of PDP workers was also attended by Mehbooba’s brother Tassaduq Mufti who she is believed to be grooming for a bigger role in Jammu and Kashmir politics.
