Search for parking space on 'Plonk' app

Finding a parking spot for a car or two-wheeler, particularly in the Central Business District (CBD), remains a challenge for motorists. At a time when civic authorities are struggling to create facilities for lawful parking spaces, this app-based model intends to convert idle spaces into parking lots.

Designed by two US-educated entrepreneurs, the app ‘Plonk’ has tied up with 33 commercial buildings to provide on-demand parking space for motorists. “Already, we have created about 1,000 parking spaces primarily in commercial buildings. Our aim is to touch the 10,000-mark in six months,” Arjun Jairaj, CEO of Plonk, told Deccan Herald over phone.

This seven-day-old app, which is available on Android and iOS platforms for smartphones, will throw up a list of vacant parking spaces available nearby. With information available on the number of parking spaces available in real time and the parking fees, users will have to scan a QR code placed at the entrance of the parking space. The parking fees could be paid with cash or through Paytm.

More importantly, the newly launched app includes a feature which encourages people with idle plots in Bengaluru to convert those spaces into parking lots in exchange for a fee. “Upload details of parking space, set its availability and price directly onto the app. Once it’s verified, users can find and use this space, and owners can make money without any extra effort,” Jairaj said.

Having made door-to-door visits to encourage conversion of empty plots into parking space, Jairaj said that he hoped to convince the managements of churches, schools as well as residential apartments in the future.
