The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology has procured a high-end digital mammography and ultrasound scanner for bettering patient care.

The ‘Selenia Dimension’ mammography equipment will ease the mammography procedure and provide more accurate data, compared to the conventional procedure. The GE colour doppler ultrasound helps form echocardiogram, ultrasound scanning of breast, study of thyroid functions and assists in biopsy guided process.

The new equipment also helps oncologists to do a comparative study of patient’s condition over time.  according to the doctors at Kidwai.

The mammography equipment cost Rs 1.9 crore while the ultrasound machine had been purchased by spending Rs 27 lakh, said  Dr K B Linge Gowda, director, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology. The two equipment were dedicated to public on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr C N Manjunath, director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research said that it was important to ensure that even basic cardiac care was available under the same roof.

“Echocardiogram is mandatory for anyone starting with treatment for cancer. Certain chemotherapy drugs are cardio-toxic and hence regular monitoring is necessary for the patients undergoing chemotherapy. Besides, there could also be metastasis in the heart. To reduce patient’s travel time and expenses, doctors from Jayadeva would themselves be offering consultation to patients at Kidwai for four days a week,” he added.
