Talking Point: Siachen Soldier Somashekhar

Guarding Indian posts at Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield is an everyday battle. Lance Naik Somashekhar, from Military Police, served in Siachen for 2 years.

He talks to DH about the harsh conditions, the emotional and physical toll, the constant battle with frostbite and other hazards of being posted at Siachen.

Infantry battalions spend three months on the glacier on rotation. The altitude affects apetite, and soldiers go months without bathing which leads to hair loss and other ailments says Somashekhar.

And there are also interesting encounters with Pakistani soldiers…
