Mobile version and app to be launched soon
Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Startup India,’ a team of students from NITK-Surathkal, have developed ‘CybrHome,’ the first-ever platform for websites where users can search and discover web portals.
By using ‘CybrHome’, one can find out top websites, blogs, apps and more for any given purpose, topic or category.
The team consists of three final year CSE undergraduates — Shubham Badal, Ashish Gupta and Ajeet Lakhani — who operate from NITK Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP).
As it has been started as a student initiative, it is assisted by Microsoft BizSpark startup and is also a part of Facebook’s FbStart programme. It is ranked among the top 25 student startups in the country at Tata First Dot Conference, powered by National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). Soon, the team will be launching a mobile version of the website and an app, CybrHom PR Head Almas Parveen said. Explaining the difference between ‘CybrHome’ and search engines like Google, she said, “We are organising the web using topics and categories so that users can browse the platforms to discover websites, topics and categories instead of simply searching. Moreover, it is built exclusively for websites and not webpages, where people can also like, rate, review or bookmark website. There is no organised website collection to hunt for websites when we need them.
“Also, there is no website discovery portal on the internet where one can go to just discover new websites and surf them. Further, there is no good website discovery engine. Google is for web pages and is not exclusive for websites. Search engines are not designed for content discovery and recommendations. ‘CybrHome’ is designed to address all these problems, and be a one-stop destination for website discovery.”
‘CybrHome’ aims to be the leader in content discovery space. It caters to all groups and helps them discover websites, for a website can change one’s life. For a few, it can mean an admission in a better college, whereas for a few others it can be a new lease of life. The team is building a platform to create a dent in the internet, and revolutionise the way the world discovers website, she added.
The team members said they are building the product and technology where we can hunt for the most useful and important websites and organise them into topics and categories. This makes the entire website discovery process very easy.
It is built exclusively for websites (and not webpages) and makes use of powerful filters such as country, language etc for more refined results.”
“Here, the users can search or browse for any topic or category and we will list you the best websites for that. For example, you can search for a topic named ‘internships’ and we will list websites of all the internships across the world right there. There is also a strong socialisation component on the platform which makes it more usable and fun. One can like, rate, review, bookmark websites. Also you can mark websites as used to tell the world. You can follow your friends and people to get to know what websites they like or have tried,” they added.
The users can also add and edit websites, topics and categories. They can now share websites on their social profiles like Facebook, Twitter etc directly from ‘CybrHome’. Further, users can directly send websites to their friends at CybrHome, the student said.
The team has eleven members working for ‘CybrHome’.
The tech team includes Vadiraja, Varsha Prabhu, Kavyasree Bhagavatula, Subhasmita Sahoo, Yuvraj Singh, Almas Parveen, Agnes Sharan and Navya Prakash.
