Solar eclipse on Wednesday

The solar eclipse in Bengaluru on March 9 will last for about 15.4 minutes, from 6.32 am to 6.47 am. However, India will witness only a partial eclipse.

According to Indian Meteorological Department officials, in most places of India, partial eclipse will begin before sunrise. The duration of the eclipse will increase in eastern parts of the country and gradually increase up to an hour and half in extreme northeast India and in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Obscuration of the Sun by the Moon at the time of greatest phase of partial eclipse will be around 15% in Agartala, 24.5% in Bhubaneswar, 11% in Guwahati, 18.5% in Kolkata, 12% in Patna, 49% in Port Blair and 12% in Silchar. However, the greatest phase of the partial eclipse will not be seen from many places in India as the sun will rise after the time of occurrence of greatest phase of those places.

People are advised not to view the eclipse with the naked eye. People should use proper filters like aluminised Mylar, black polymer, welding glass of shade number 14 or by making projection of sun’s image on a white board using a telescope.
