JOIN USThe fairytale marriage of Telangana singer Madhupriya showed signs of breakdown with the teenager lodging a complaint of physical and mental torture against her husband Srikanth on Saturday.
The singer, who filed the complaint at the Humayun Nagar Police station, is currently in the custody of her parents.
Madhupriya, the child sensation who inspired the youth through her songs in chaste Telangana accent during the statehood agitation, reduced TRS leader K Chandrasekhar Rao to tears with the song “Aadapillanamma” (I am a girl), which she composed and sang as an adolescent.
She continues to sing on girl child issues, having featured in all Telangana agitation forums. In September, Madhupriya declared that she attained the age of 18 and said she was in love with Srikanth from Adilabad, whom she knew for some time. She had even acted in a shot film he made.
Despite her parents Peddinti Mallesh and Sujatha’s insistence that she was a minor, the teenager married Srikanth at Kaghaznagar in Adilabad after police intervention in October. Madhupriya admitted that was a mistake.
“I have learnt a bitter lesson,” she said. “Srikanth, who enjoyed the money I earned through singing, began harassing me for dowry three months after our marriage.”
“He beat me and even kicked me in the stomach. In six months, I had seen sixty years of torture,” Madhupriya said, breaking down.
Police complaint
Meanwhile, Madhupriya’s parents filed another case in Uppal police station alleging that Srikanth and his friends attacked them at home during the wee hours of Sunday.
Refuting the allegations, Srikanth claimed that Madhupriya’s relatives beat him up after inviting him for a reconciliation meeting. Meanwhile, the Humayun Nagar Police station had called both the families in a last-ditch attempt to save the marriage.
