Sanitary napkin incinerators in BBMP hospitals, colleges

Schools, colleges and hospitals run by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon get eco-friendly sanitary napkin incinerators fitted with activated carbon filter.

Nisha Nazre, founder of Zuci Fem Care Solutions, said: “The small machine has an inbuilt activated carbon filter and a chamber with blower. Used pads can be burnt by placing them inside the machine. One napkin takes about two minutes to burn and produces less than one gram of powdered ash.”

Nazre conducts public awareness programmes on menstrual hygiene. She said she took the initiative after seeing municipal workers disposing napkins in unhygienic conditions and women dumping them in public spaces.

It took her four years to bring out the scientific sanitary disposal system titled ‘Raka hygiene care – care for the future mother’. Each unit costs Rs 10,000-80,000 depending on the capacity to dispose napkins.

The machine was tested in five schools before being approved by the Palike. “By the end of June, the machine will get operational in Bengaluru. The mayor assured me of including the proposal in the upcoming budget,” she said.
