The Centre for Geoinformatics Technology, department of studies in Geography, University of Mysore (UoM), has organised a three-day workshop on ‘Introduction to GIS and Remote Sensing,’ with an objective to create awareness about the latest advancement in geospatial technology among undergraduates of science and arts students and lecturers, at Manasagangothri, here, from Monday.

After inaugurating the event, Vice-Chancellor K S Rangappa, highlight the importance of the Geographical Information System (GIS), said, today the GIS was used to interlink private and public sector in various developmental activities. “GIS is involved in almost all sectors, including agriculture, engineering, planning, rural development, human resource development and others. Considering the importance of the GIS, the department of Geography, which was functioning in Maharaja’s College, was shifted to Manasagangothri in 2014 with a change in nomenclature as Centre for Geoinformatics Technology,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, GIS course coordinator Ramu said, geoinformatics is a multi-disciplinary activity, which deals with remote sensing, Geographical Information System and Global Positioning Systems. All these complement and support the field of cartography, technically, which is an art and science of mapping and has been a technical strength of geographers, geologists, surveyors and even scientists like botanists, zoologists and in recent years engineers, architects, anthropologists and planners. Under the emerging disciplines of Geographical Information Science, geo-informatics is becoming even more versatile and useful in ontological, semantical and is useful in ontological, semantic, cyber and web-GIS, he said.
