Reimagining the city

Last Updated 04 April 2016, 17:40 IST
Don’t be surprised if you happen to walk into standees that depict the glorious, colonial past of Bengaluru or step into a room featuring state-of-the-art designs.

All this is on display at ‘Designuru’, Bengaluru’s first arts, architecture and design festival.
Organised and curated by the Indian Institute of Interior Designs, Bangalore Chapter at Boulevard, M G Road, the ongoing festival aims to provide efficient and sustainable solutions to civic projects and help bring design and urbanity to the centre of public conversation.

Through a number of workshops, exhibitions, lectures, activities, stalls and installations in architecture, heritage, urban design and interior design; ‘Designuru’ aims to make strong and sustainable design attainable to the public, stimulate curiosity and focus on green spaces.  The festival is focussing on how state-of-the-art design can empower senses and community spaces and reconstruct Bengaluru’s identity through projects that directly interact with citizens.

Activities like puppetry, street art, pottery and clay making are especially curated for children.   Vidya from ‘Team Ethos’, who is conducting an interior design workshop at the
festival, says, “We have chosen 5 stores in M G Road so students can go there in teams of 4, figure out its strengths and opportunities and chart out a proposal for efficient design-based solutions for the store. We will also conduct a dustbin design and a performance arts workshop related to urbanity. We want to see how music, dance, theatre and photographs can fit into an urban space and the kind of artistic movement a certain space evokes.”

Students at Jos Alukkas, M G Road, came up with a list of ideas on how to make the store friendlier for visitors and engage and interact with art inside the store. They charted out a proposal which looked at solutions at the micro level and at a larger context, with respect to its surroundings.

About 100 people, architects, students and artists, are brainstorming on how to reclaim lost spaces during the festival. Inclusion, an important aspect of urbanity, is also discussed and showcased through several design urban interventions.

Specific models that cater to ways of making cloistered areas such as Church Street and Ulsoor much more pedestrian friendly are on display. The festival will cover almost all areas of Bengaluru, such as old, colonial areas and upscale commercial areas and give rise to a vast number of urban narratives.

Amit Mirchandani, from ‘Lucid’ will talk about ‘Landing a Dream Job in Design’. Leading personalities will engage in conversations about the growing metropolis, the changing city and their vision for Bengaluru.

There are special activities and workshops that are curated for the public such as bamboo design, furniture design and wire bending. A series of heritage walks will start on April 8, where Bengalureans will get a glimpse of lost heritage buildings. Live performances and drum jams will add to the largesse of this festival.

Films such as ‘My Architect’, ‘Our Metropolis’ and ‘Pete’ will also be screened. The festival is on till April 10 at Boulevard, M G Road.
