BJP wins South, East civic bodies' mayoral elections

While BJP’s Satya Sharma has been elected as the new mayor of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, Shyam Sharma of the party won the mayoral post in the south civic agency on Wednesday.

It is the last year of the BJP’s five-year term in power in the three municipalities. The three MCDs will go to polls in 2017, which will be a three-pronged contest with Aam Aadmi Party giving indications to enter the fray. The AAP is already contesting the civic bypolls in 13 wards scheduled on May 15.

In East Corporation’s mayoral elections, the voting took place at the civic agency’s headquarter in Patparganj Industrial Area at around noon on Wednesday.

In all, 60 votes were polled, of which the New Usmanpur councillor, Sharma secured 41 votes and Taj Mohammed, Congress councillor from Nehru Vihar, got 18 votes. One vote was declared invalid and five councillors did not turn up for the election.

Raj Kumar Dhillon, BJP councillor from Kalyan Puri was elected as the deputy mayor. Dhillon defeated Congress councillor from Ghonda Raj Kumari by 23 votes. While Dhillon bagged 41 votes, Kumari received 18 votes.

BJP councillors, Jeetendra Chaudhary from Azad Nagar, and Sanjay Jain of Maujpur, and Congress councillor from Subhash Mohalla, Savita Sharma, were unanimously declared members of the Standing Committee in East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Satya Sharma entered politics in 1993 and was elected councillor in 2007 and 2012. She was the chairperson of the ‘code of conduct committee’ of the unified MCD from 2009 to 2012. She also headed the ‘works committee’ during 2012-14. At present, she is the chairperson of the ‘education committee’ of the East Corporation.

Satya Sharma said that her priority would be to take forward the Swachh Bharat Mission besides improving healthcare facilities and providing quality education to children.

She announced that Wi-Fi service would soon be started in 50 municipal schools under the East Corporation.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation mayoral polls took place at the Civic Centre at around 2 pm. A total of 99 votes were polled, of which the Janakpuri North councillor, Shyam Sharma secured 62 votes and Praveen Rana, Congress councillor from Bijwasan, got 37 votes.

Shashi Prabha, BJP councillor from Hastsal was elected as the deputy mayor. Prabha
defeated Congress councillor from Deoli, Shatish Gupta by 21 votes. While Prabha pocketed 60 votes, Gupta got 39 votes.

BJP councillors, Subhash Arya from Rajouri Garden, and Shailendra Singh Monty of Safdurjung Enclave and Congress councillor from Nizamuddin, Farhad Suri, were unanimously declared members of the Standing Committee in South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
