Dutee Chand smashed the long-standing national record in the women’s 100 metres but fell agonisingly short of the Olympic qualification mark by one hundredth of a second on the opening day of the Federation Cup National Athletics Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

The men’s 100M record also came crashing down with Amiya Kumar Mallick of Odisha timing 11.26 seconds in the semifinals before slipping to fourth in the final.

Dutee broke Rachita Mistry’s record of 11.38 seconds set in 2000. The Odisha girl clocked 11.33 seconds with the cut off for Rio standing at 11.32 seconds. None of the athletes could make the grade for Rio on this day.

Dutee, however, was confident of achieving the mark in the coming events. She was followed by her statemate Srabani Nanda (11:45) and Canara Bank’s H M Jyothi who finished in 11:46 seconds. Both were personal best performances.

Watched by her coach N Ramesh and officials of her sports management company, Dutee spoke of her determination to do well for the country. Her coaches are planning on sending her to US for training and to participate in at least two Olympic qualyfing events in Europe.

“I could not qualify for Rio Olympics but I am not disappointed. I am extremely happy, the national record is mine now. It is very early in the season, it's the first meet and I have three more months to qualify for the Rio Olympics," Dutee said.

The final also saw the presence of Pinki Pramanik who returned to the competitive circuit after a rocky time in her personal life. She finished seventh in 12.33 seconds.

In the men’s 100M semifinals, Odisha’s Mallick broke the record of 10.30 that belonged to Abdul Najeeb Quresh (set in 2010) and P Anil Kumar (in 2005). He, however, couldn’t repeat his performance in the finals where he finished fourth in 10. 51 seconds.

"It is hard to run three races (preliminary heats, semifinals and finals) in a day. I pulled by left hamstring in the semifinal and could not do well in the final," Mallick rued.

Bihar’s Jyotisankar Debnath won the final in 10.41 seconds with Maharashtra’s Krishnakumar Rane (10.44) and ONGC’s Abdul Qureshi (10.50) taking the second and third positions.

In the men’s shot put, all eyes were on Inderjeet Singh, who has already made the cut for the Olympics and is returning from a five-month training stint in the US. He, however, had to settle for the second position (19.17M) with Tejinderpal Singh Toor taking the first position (19.93M).

The final of women’s 100M hurdles event had only two participants in fray. The efforts of Haryana’s Pinki Rani (15.41 seconds) and Priyanka (18.39) were discounted after the third participant Gayathry Govindharajan pulled out of the race.
