Bengaluru's 1st skywalk with escalators opens

Last Updated 03 May 2016, 03:28 IST

Bengaluru’s first skywalk with escalators opened on Hosur road near Forum Mall on Monday. Skywalks with lifts also opened in Yeshwantpur in front of Govardhan theatre and on Mysuru Road in front of Gopalan Mall.

All the skywalks have CCTV surveillance and lighting, and will be open from 7 am to 10 pm every day. Mayor B N Manjunatha Reddy inaugurated the skywalks along with Bengaluru Development Minister K J George. The mayor said the skywalks were built on Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer (DBFOT) basis in Public Private Partnership (PPP). The lease duration is 20 years.

He said the BBMP planned to construct a total of 120 skywalks across Bengaluru and that feasibility reports on the same were ready. “We got permission to build 29 skywalks and have constructed nine of them,” he said.

Three more skywalks are under construction. The proposal to construct 12 skywalks has been dropped because of technical glitches, he added. The skywalk with escalator has been built by Prakash Arts Private Limited at Rs 3 crore.

Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers, Ananth Kumar who was also present, showed his displeasure over the state of skywalks. “About 20 years ago, Bengaluru got its first skywalk on KG Road but today it has turned into a haven for illegal activities. Skywalks should come up at places with high traffic and busy areas,” he said.

Argument with minister

A Congress worker from Azad Nagar, Varaprasad, got into a heated argument with minister K J George during the inauguration of a skywalk near Gopalan Mall on Mysuru Road. He said Azad Nagar corporator, Sujatha D C Ramesh, was not invited to the event, though the area came under her ward.
