Art gallery adoption: Artists warn of bigger protest

The Venkatappa Art Gallery (VAG) Forum has written to the state government saying it would intensify public protests, if the government fails to justify its reasons for privatising the art gallery.

They have reiterated their demand for the scrapping of the MoU (memorandum of understanding) between the state government and the city-based Tasveer Foundation.

In a letter addressed to Industries and Tourism Minister R V Deshpande, dated May 2, the forum has attacked the government for not coming up with concrete reasons or arguments to support its action to precipitate the MoU. The members also decried that all RTI applications filed on behalf of VAG Forum have been ‘unfairly’ rejected by the Tourism department.

“We firmly believe that your silence is a slap on the face of the visual arts community of Karnataka. We would like to inform you that if the government continues to be adamant and against its own people, we will pursue our resistance and public protest even more rigorously,” the letter stated.

Members of the forum met the minister and officials concerned on February 26 and March 31. They contended that one month has gone by, with the government making no attempts to reach out to artists, nor was there any statement about a decision regarding the scrapping of the MoU.
