Ola has outsmarted Uber India in the taxi aggregation business during the first quarter of 2016, as its drivers and users received more calls, states global phone directory app TrueCaller.

Based on the communication volume between drivers and its users, the Swedish-based company came up with a snapshot that Ola has more than twice the market share campared with its rival, Uber India.

The TrueCaller study, which is done during January 1 to April 17, found that out of the total 2.49 billion calls made and received by Indian smartphone owners to cab aggregators,  4.1% of all calls is identified as being made for the purpose of getting a taxi from Ola or Ola drivers.

Ola cab users were successful in racking up 59.5 million outgoing calls and 42.5 million incoming calls during the same period. While total calls came up to 1.6% only, Uber India received total 24.5 million outgoing and 13.6 million incoming calls.

India has a total 684 million phones, out of 1.25 billion population, and among them, 2.5 million smartphone users avail cabs on the move in various parts of the country. TrueCaller says that 94% of all calls for taxis or private cars were made independent of Uber, Ola or other booking apps like Meru or Ola-owned TaxiForSure.

Ola, which started its operation, in 2010, has got a first mover’s advantage, with a presence in 102 cities, and has a total of 4.5 lakh vehicles. The taxi aggregator platform operates three types of cabs — Micro, Mini, and Prime which charge Rs 6/km, Rs 8/km, and Rs 10/km, respectively.

When Deccan Herald contacted Ola, its Senior Director (Marketing Communication) Anand Subramanian said the company has already made it clear that it has 75% market share. “Our Ola Micro itself is bigger than the whole of Uber India. The TrueCaller study once reinforces our domination in the market,” he said.

Even though Uber India started its service in August 2013, the company has sizeable presence in the big cities, where more volume of taxi booking is happening.

Recently, WhichApp that lets friends share their favourite apps with each other came up with a finding that Ola usage was double than that of Uber. Here the sample size of the app was only around one lakh users.
