The public cloud services market in the country is projected to grow 30.4% to reach $1.26 billion this year, as organisations are pursuing a digital business strategy, Gartner, the leading US-based research and advisory firm on information technology, said on Thursday.

Sid Nag, research director at Gartner, said, “India is witnessing a shift from legacy IT services to cloud-based services. The public cloud services market, which stood at $968.1 million in 2015, will reach $3.52 billion by 2020. Cloud services are growing due to organisations, including big enterprises, SMEs and startups pursuing a digital business strategy.”

According to Gartner, the highest growth in the public cloud business will come from infrastructure as a services (IaaS) segment, as enterprises move away from data centre build-outs and move their infrastructure needs to the public cloud. “It is projected to grow 32.5% in 2016 to reach $448.9 million. Certain market leaders have built a significant lead in this segment, so providers should focus on creating differentiation for success,” he said.

Platform as a service (PaaS) is projected to growh 31.7% to reach $82.1 million. “This is an artifact of enterprises looking to develop and build applications in the public cloud that are cloud native, as well as non-cloud native applications that are refactored taking advantage of PaaS,” said Nag.

While the cloud management and security services market will be $104.2 million in 2016 and $134.5 million from $79.4 million in 2015, Gartner report finds that cloud advertising market will be $123.2 million in 2016 and $158 million from $95.6 million in 2015.

In a recent statement, NxtGen Data Center & Cloud Services MD and CEO A S Rajgopal said that demand for cloud services in South Asia is growing rapidly.“But to succeed in this market and stay ahead of the competition, it is essential to keep costs low, and for that end-to-end data centre automation is critical,” he added.

In a recent study, IDC’s Cloud IT Infrastructure Tracker projects 48% of IT spend will be in cloud infrastructure by 2020. “The traditional IT spending for on-premises hardware and software in 2016 will amount to 62.8% of the total infrastructure spend. Spending on cloud computing — both by enterprises for private cloud and cloud service providers for public cloud — amounts to 37.2%.
