A mob lynched a man in Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district, about 325 kilometres from here, while he was trying to escape after shooting his divorced wife dead.

According to the police sources here, the man, identified as Mohammed Hadi, a resident of the neighbouring Azamgarh district, opened fire at his divorced wife Shadia Bano, while she was on her way back home after taking classes at a local “madarsa” (Islamic school) near Bandi Kalan village in the district on Thursday.
Shadia was rushed to the hospital but was declared brought dead.

Hadi, who tried to escape after perpetrating the crime, was caught by a mob, which had gathered there on hearing the gun shots. The mob hit Hadi with bricks and sticks repeatedly killing him on the spot, the police said.

Police said that Hadi, who worked in a Gulf country, had been married to Shadia five years back and they also had a daughter.

Their relations, however, turned bitter a year after the marriage and later Shadia was divorced. She had returned to her parents’ house in Mau and took up a job of teacher at a local school.

Police said that Hadi, off late, had been exerting pressure on Shadia to come back to him but she had flatly refused. “Hadi had been harassing Shadia even after the divorce”, said Shadia’s uncle Zulfiqar. “He (Hadi) used to post pictures of Shadia with beard and moustache on social networking sites,” Zulfiqar said adding that Hadi had earlier warned Shadia of serious consequences if she spurned him.

Police said that Hadi was waiting for Shadia on the road which she used to take to go home from the school.

Police has provided security to Shadia’s family members as they apprehended that Hadi’s family members might try to attack them. The police were trying to identify the people, who were part of the mob that lynched Hadi.
