'Dance to me is similar to modelling'

Last Updated 23 May 2016, 18:32 IST

She has mastered the art of graceful posing, and if one sees her standing tall at 5 ft 10 inches, they can’t help but admire her charisma. Her subtle sense of humour and the positive aura around her can light up any conversation. Coco Rocha, the Canadian supermodel, was recently in the city to promote USL-Diageo's #LoveScotch campaign. In a chat with  Surupasree Sarmmah, Coco gets candid about her career and life after motherhood.

You are known for your graceful shots...

I started modelling 14 years ago and time has flown by. The reason why I am known for posing I guess is because I used to dance. And dance to me is similar to modelling, you get in front of the camera, put some music on and you move. It is flattering to hear people get excited to see what I do, it is my job and I absolutely love it. I think models are always meant to be muses. You are supposed to inspire people and that’s how I thought of modelling.

Your best shot so far...
My favourite shot in general is anything that I have done with Steven Meisel. Anything he touches is good. He is a kind human being and very creative.

Tell me about your clothing line ‘Co+Co’?
It is a venture by my husband and me. We mainly work with something called sports sheets — materials and elements of sports. These materials were used only to make sportswear but now we are making it more commercially wearable. ‘Co+Co’ is doing great in the market. I feel like I am in high school, learning everything from scratch about sales, business and public relations.

Five essentials you carry with you..
Phone, my phone is my life support; sunglasses, because it is helpful when one is out in the sun or simply when you don’t want to look at someone (laughs). There is make-up because everyone needs their  touchup essentials. Also, there are  credit cards and now that I have a baby, there is a lot of baby stuff in my bag too.

Challenges  you face as a model...
When I was a young model, I was definitely under a lot of pressure probably because we don’t know where to put our foot on. It is a challenging industry. One slowly learns what is good and things tend to get easier. Even today, there are times when I become nervous, and I feel like my 14-year-old self.

What do you have tell young models?
I always tell young models to have a voice. If they are uncomfortable, learn to say no. Trust your instincts and you don’t have to do everything.

How is it embracing motherhood?
I love it. It is my favourite thing to go home to. Being a mom is beautiful, from waking up at 6 am to feeding, potty training and playing in her room. This is the first long trip without her but I make sure I FaceTime with her all the time. As a model, there are no changes as such, only that life has become more organised now.

Your future projects that you can talk about?
At present I am focussing on my clothing line, and we are already working on our spring-summer collection for next year. It is a very busy year ahead.

Any one you look up to?
There are two amazing human beings I  know— Iman and Cindy Crawford.  They have been successful in everything they have done  —  from being models to mothers and businesswomen.
