The ‘Friends Outlet’ at Jal Vayu Vihar (JVV) shopping complex in Kammanahalli is only three days old. Already a good number of people are seen hanging out at the outlet which serves free tea and coffee to people.

The concept of serving free tea and coffee was introduced by the residents of JVV, which is one of the oldest gated residential colonies in the city. There are a number of other commercial outlets, a post office and a few shops, too, on the JVV premises. The outlet has been launched to cater for the working class on the JVV premises.

The idea of offering free cups of steaming beverages was the brainchild of retired Wing Commander (Wg Cdr) K Venkatachalam, who was inspired by ‘Operation Sulaimani’ introduced in Kozhikode, Kerala, to ensure no one is denied food. Food is provided free of cost to the needy through coupons.

Staffer at the outlet, Nerris D’Cruz, said: “The tea and coffee-vending machines were donated by a non-governmental organisation. The response is good and we are expecting the crowd to swell.”

However, those who want to pay can do so voluntarily, added Mani, another staffer.

‘Operation Sulaimani’Venkatachalam explains: “I came across a few videos on the social media on free food being provided to the needy through initiatives by several volunteers. I was deeply inspired by ‘Operation Sulaimani’ and decided to start something on the same lines. I discussed with other like-minded people who immediately supported the cause. Col Shankaranaryan and Ramlal Luthra, both residents of JVV, provided the much-needed support and the idea officially materialised on May 21.”

Retired Wg Cdr Thomas Verghese said the facility was presently available only to those inside the JVV premises between 10 am and 2 pm and 4 pm and 7.30 pm, and also to those who are permitted to enter the colony. There are plans to instal the vending machines outside the JVV, so that it is accessible to outsiders also.

“We want to make it functional 24/7. Sustainability is a bit of a challenge while the machine runs on electricity. However, we are confident that the facility will be soon made available to the needy outside JVV,” Verghese added.
