Breakfast calling

Eat, sleep, travel, repeat — that is the routine many Bengalureans are following today. The breakfast culture here is growing and many are taking their love for food beyond city limits. Come weekends, and riders are seen heading to the outskirts to enjoy the gorgeous countryside and savour some delicious breakfast.

Snehal Sekhar, a team leader, is one of those who goes on breakfast trips with his friends during the weekends. He says, “We usually head to the highways. We love riding towards the Mangaluru highway to relish some amazing ‘thatte idli’. If we’re going towards Davangere, the ‘benne dosa’ there is an absolute must. There are also plenty of ‘masala dosa’ stalls available on Kanakapura Road.” While most of the travels don’t usually involve the food aspect, it’s always something that we end the trip with.

These trips are also about exploring new places. For Chaitanya B, a senior sales marketing consultant, it’s all about being with his superbike group and discovering a new place. He says, “We do plenty of rides where we just go in search of food. We’ve driven down to Ambur and Chikkamagaluru for ‘biryani’.”

Even though he says that he’s not a foodie, he enjoys the fact that he gets to visit certain places because there are other food lovers with him. “For me, it’s about learning about the new place, the culture, and interacting with the local people. Since food is an important aspect of understanding their culture, we get to enjoy that as well,” he adds.

When many drivers and riders love these trips just for the travel part, they are curious where they would stop for food. Taushik Mendel, a photographer, says, “Many riders have a tie-up with various restaurants in the outskirts of the city, so it saves the hassle of finding a place to sit. And if it’s a new place that we are travelling to, a posh hotel is not what we look for.  As long as there is good space to park your bike and you know that it’s safe, I don’t think anything else matters much.”

He loves riding towards Tumkur Road to relish the ‘thatte idli’ and Kamat Hotels for their delicious ‘dosas’. He says, “There’s also a new place that’s opened at the foothills of Nandi Hills where you get interesting food. Earlier, there were a variety of stalls towards the hills where we could have noodles and omelettes after our long ride.”

Though many travel to not-so-far-away places to enjoy breakfast, there are a few others who take up the challenge and head  further. Shubhakar Nayak, the founder of Aaxeleron Technology Solutions (P) Ltd. is someone who enjoys riding up to Tamil Nadu and Mangaluru to have the food of his choice. He says, “Riding down to Ambur for ‘Biryani’ and the ‘Saravana Bhavans’ in every highway have become our regular haunts. It is an amazing ride where we feel close to nature and away from the noise and population. And when there’s a beautiful scenery overlooking the hot food that you’re relishing, the ride makes it worth it. It’s the best way to start your day.”
