Last Updated 24 June 2016, 20:42 IST

Members of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) inspected Doddabidarakallu lake at Nagasandra on Friday. They issued a warning to the apartments, industries and households which were letting waste water into the water body.

The lake that has a history of more than 100 years is on the verge of dying due to rampant encroachment, illegal activities and sewage water flow. To take stock of the situation, the board members visited the water body. They were shocked to find waste water from various sources entering and polluting the lake. “We were told by locals to inspect the lake and see its state. We could not verify as to which government agency the lake maintenance falls under, however,” said a board member, Dr Jai Prakash Alva.

Sources in Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board said a study is being undertaken and soon a sewage treatment plant (STP) would be set up to treat the waste water. They added that the Central funds for lake development would be utilised for setting up the STP.

The 10-acre lake has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes due to garbage and sewage,  locals said. Subhash Shetty, who lives in an apartment near the lake, said that the lake joins the Thippagondanahalli reservoir. “Despite several memorandums to BBMP and other agencies, nothing has been done so far to revive the water body. We were told by the Palike, that the lake belongs under Bangalore Development Authority (BDA),” he added.
