Former chairman of Microsoft India, Ravi Venkatesan, spoke at the meeting of the Bangalore chapter of IIT-Bombay Alumni Association, in the city on Saturday.

At the event where several upcoming technologies like Data Science, Internet of Things (IOT), Clean Technology and e-learning and career options in them were discussed, Venkatesan gave some advice from his experience.

Predicting that in the future several jobs will be automated, he said, “The conventional idea of jobs is changing. Today, one has to be entrepreneurial and experimental.”

Having made several leaps in his career, from being a mechanical engineer to heading the operations of Microsoft in India and now as chairman of Bank of Baroda, he cited examples from his life, while giving advice.

Particulary addressing those above forty-years mark, he said those seeking professional growth need to move out of their comfort zones.

“You need to be able to learn quickly and this ability is like a muscle. Flex it by doing small activities out of area of expertise and then bigger roles.”

Rachana Vaishampayan, a marketing professional who accompanied her IIT alumnus husband to the event, said, “Ravi Venkatesan talked about so many things which we know but don’t think of. He said about being healthy to improve our productivity. “I could relate to his speech and they were things I could apply in my life as well,” she added.

About 150 IIT alumni were present at the event in which data scientists from WalmartLabs, professionals from IBM and several other companies talked about career opportunities in new technologies.
