Steel flyover likely to be realigned

In the backdrop of opposition from a section of commuters and traffic analysts, the proposed six-lane steel bridge between Basaveshwara Circle and Hebbal may be realigned.

The proposal came up during a meeting of urban experts convened by Bengaluru Development Minister K J George on Thursday.

The Bangalore Development Authority was directed to take up a feasibility study of the proposed realignment. The report would be later discussed with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

As per the proposed realignment, the upper ramp of the flyover would begin at the Institution of Engineers (India) at Balekundri Circle onto Queen’s Road towards Cantonment Railway Station and turn onto Jayamahal Road till Mekhri Cirlce from where it would be connected to the Hebbal flyover.

This will facilitate the easy execution of the project as the government is said to have already acquired land from Palace Grounds, which comes on the left side of the flyover, up to Mekhri Circle.

The lower ramp will be adjacent to the Bengaluru Traffic Management Centre near the Cubbon Park metro station. The forks of both the ramps would meet at the beginning of Cunningham Road.

As per the earlier proposal, the 6.9-km steel flyover was to begin from Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal flyover with an extension on Sankey Road up to LRDE complex.

The project ran into trouble as it required up to 5 acres, including land from the heritage Balabrooie Guest House. Besides, about 500 trees had to be axed.

Traffic analyst, who was part of Thursday’s meeting, said: “The revised stretch would not only protect open spaces but also decongest Ballari Road from Raj Bhavan after the completion of the proposed flyover on the realigned line.

“Since there are relatively less number of people using Queen’s Road, the construction of the flyover would not disturb many commuters on the crucial road to the international airport. Besides, the previous alignment included destroying flyovers, bridges and skywalks. With the revised route map, the government can retain all these infrastructure,” he said.

Meanwhile, minister KJ Goerge said, “The present alignment of steel flyover was not final. Based on the suggestions and inputs from people, we are open for realignment. The technicality and feasibility will be studied by an expert committee. Some have suggested road through Mekri circle, Jayamahal, Queens Road and Vidhana Soudha. We are looking into it. The proposal will go to Metropolitan Planning Authority for final approval.’’
