Songs from the soul

Indie musician
Last Updated 30 September 2017, 18:36 IST

His breezy music proves that sometimes, all a good song needs is simple lyrics and a pleasant tune. Blending his soulful voice seamlessly with minimal instruments, singer-songwriter Prateek Kuhad has the ability to transport his listeners to a magical world altogether.

One of the most sought-after artistes in the Indian independent music today, Prateek’s popularity has only grown by leaps and bounds ever since the release of his debut album ‘In Tokens & Charms’ in early 2015. Known for beautiful melodies like ‘Raat Raazi’ and the more recently released ‘Tum Jab Paas’, the Delhi-based musician speaks to Sunday Herald about his journey, inspirations, and more...

How did your journey in music begin?
I’ve been singing since I was quite young, but I started taking songwriting seriously only around the age of 18-19 years. It happened soon after I started to play the guitar.

You held a regular job in a consulting firm for a while before taking up music full-time. What was the experience like?
Horrible! Which is why I swiftly moved to music.

You have also been in trained classical music? Which is your favourite genre?
I trained in classical music very briefly, just for a few months. But even those few months of training have had a significant impact on my abilities as a singer. When it comes to genres, I don’t really have a favourite genre. I listen to all kinds of music. I’m usually more concerned with the songwriting behind a track.

Who are you inspirations and influences in music?
Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, ‘The Tallest Man On Earth’, Led Zeppelin, John Mayer, Jack Johnson, to name a few.

What do you think of the Indian independent music scene?
I think it’s growing, but we still have a very long way to go.

How has travel influenced your music? Which has been your most memorable tour so far?
To be honest, travel hasn’t really affected my music. But as far as the most memorable tour is concerned, it was the Australia/Singapore tour I did last year.

You are conscious about the environment too. Please tell us a little bit more about that.
I’m an animal lover and a vegetarian, but that is for ethical reasons. But I probably should be more on top of environmental issues, but to be completely honest, I’m not so far. I'm more concerned about humanitarian issues, especially in the context of our country. I think we need to solve those on an urgent basis before talking about the environment. Not to say we should neglect the environment.

What are your future projects and plans?
We’re working on some releases, which I don’t want to say much about. Other than that a lot of shows at festivals and a few at clubs are coming up in the next few months! I’m excited to play some new songs.

What is your advice to all the aspiring musicians out there?
Try and be as independent about your thoughts as possible. Society, family and the people around you will constantly try and influence you. So try and be conscious about the kind of person you are and embrace that.
