Kabaddi academy finally takes wings

After being in the pipeline for over a year, the kabaddi academy, to be run by former India international BC Ramesh and supported by Bengaluru Bulls, was launched here on Monday.

Located inside the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, the academy is registered as ‘The BC Ramesh Kabaddi Academy’ and a bunch of students from Sports Authority Of India (SAI) and Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES) have begun their training there.

Owned by the DYES, the land for the academy has been leased out to the Bengaluru franchise for five years. Bulls’ owner Uday Sinh Wala, who had announced the idea of a kabaddi academy last year, said that the government gave the nod four months ago.

Speaking about the goals for the academy, Uday said: “We want to venture into schools and spot young talents. We will have two training sessions each in the morning and evening – for under-14 and under-16 players. We’ll probably have separate individual sessions for the senior players to hone their skills. When the complete recruitment process is done, then the academy will operate officially.”

Ramesh said that the basic facilities for the academy have been set up and he is keen on bringing in more reputed coaches. “The laying of the mat and interiors of the premises were completed 20 days ago. We need more coaches in the academy and we have approached some reputed international names for the job,” pointed out Ramesh.

Ramesh’s brother, BC Suresh, is expected to be one of the technical directors of the academy. Uday said that they haven’t decided on charging the players for the academy, but if in case they seek fee from the players, 60 per cent of the money will go to DYES. “If we are charging money for the academy, 60 per cent will go to DYES while the Bulls will get 40 per cent. However, we have not though about it yet.”
