If you want to teach waste management techniques and solutions to your children in a simple yet effective way, then ‘Trashonomics’ book is the one to lay your hands on.

‘Trashonomics - solid waste management, a simple guide for children' aims at creating awareness among children on waste and, make them socially responsible.

The book has been brought out by Bengaluru-based Solid Waste Management Round Table (SWMRT), a special interest group of experts and concerned citizens working for sustainable solid waste management in the city.

The 44 page-book is full of fun facts, graphics and pictures to explain an array of topics such as composting, organic waste, waste segregation, black spots, effects of burning waste, life cycle of waste and related information. The book also has activity section such as how to make compost and segregate waste at home and visiting a dry waste collection centre.

“Children are the best change makers and this book aims to empower them to lead the change by redefining the historical narrative on waste as something to be thrown away. The book is targeted at middle school children (fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth standard) specially,” said Claire Rao who along with Archana Kashyap, both SWMRT volunteers, conceptualised the project.

It took over six months for SWMRT members to research, gather information and get the book published. Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and SWMRT launched the book on World Environment Day this year. The book in English will soon be available in Kannada, said SWMRT members.

In five sessions

Archana said the book with five chapters can be taught in five sessions to school children. Since the launch, they have got enquiries from schools across the city.

“We have got enquiries from Mumbai, Delhi, Ooty, Gurgaon and Meghalaya as well. We want the book to be included as a supplement to the environmental science subject or value-added learning for middle school,” she stated.

The book can be obtained through Flipkart, Pothi and Amazon or one can log onto www.2bin1bag.in for bulk orders.
