District In-charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj said the erstwhile Dakshina Kannada district excelled in education sector and its credit should go to Christian missionaries. He was speaking after inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations Milagres College at Kallianpur on Saturday.

Madhwaraj said Christian missionaries revolutionalised the education sector in the region. “Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have carved their own niche in the field due to their efforts.  Both the districts are far ahead in the education index and can be compared with any other district in USA and European countries. Both the districts have the growth rate ahead of all other districts in the country,” he appreciated.

He said Christian Education Board has set up 270 educational institutions in both the districts and their contribution to education is immense.

Briefing about a survey taken up to evaluate education, health, drinking water, sanitations status of the gram panchayats in the state, the minister said the top three places goes to Bengaluru Urban, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. All these districts are above the average criteria.  Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are highly developed in this aspect, he added.

He said Kallianpur Church is historically famous for nearly 400 years. Milagres College was founded in 1967 when Kallianpur was a poor hamlet lost amid small rivulets. The strong desire of the Christian missionary, who set up the college at his ripe age of 83 in this poor hamlet, is truly incredible, he added.

Calling upon students to be the brand ambassadors of the cultural and educational heritage of the region, the minister said the college rose to fame only by the brilliance of the students, who excelled in various areas. He also lauded the attempt of the college to set up corpus fund to help poor students.

Udupi Diocese Bishop Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, College Correspondent Fr Stany B Lobo, Fr Lawrence D’Souza and Vincent Alva were present.
