For singing sensation and popular TV host Shantanu Mukherjee popularly known as Shaan, reality shows bring tremendous popularity to winners.

But many end up confusing this popularity with success and that’s the reason why they disappear from the industry after sometime, he says.

“Singers like Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh have proved to be great examples of successful singers from reality shows. But others, who ‘disappear’ after reality shows, are those who think that their popularity has made them successful as singers,” says Shaan.

“I think that reality show winners must continue with their ‘riyaz’ even after winning the show, and should realise that road to success is long,” he adds.

However, the 44-year-old ‘Tanha Dil’ singer, who has been singing since the tender age of five, says that he won’t suggest anyone to take up singing as the only profession in today’s times. While both his sons, aged 14 and 11, are into music and have had small stints as singers, he says that he will suggest them “not to be entirely dependent on singing.”

“Today we have only two or three-note songs, where the singing part (which is further tuned) is very less. So there is hardly any singing left now. I would suggest one to take singing as a passion, and not a profession,” he elucidates.

Apart from being popular for singing romantic songs like ‘Wo pehli baar’, ‘Tune Mujhe Pehechana Nahi’ and ‘Chaand Sifarish’, Shaan has also been a TV host for shows ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’, ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champ’s and ‘Star Voice of India’.

He is now all geared up for his next ‘The Voice India Kids’, a reality show for children aged between six to 14 years to showcase their singing talent.

Sharing his experience with the young ones, Shaan tells Metrolife, “Children perform with less inhibition. Very rarely will I see any child losing confidence on stage, even when there are sound glitches. They don’t get conscious anymore thinking how they would appear while singing.” According to him, children as young as nine, 10 or 11 year old are singing “far better than grown-ups”.

The show, which will be aired on &TV every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm from July 23, has Shekhar Ravijani and Neeti Mohan along with Shaan as the “coaches” of the participants. Along with mentoring these budding artistes, the hosts have also been taking counselling sessions with children and parents to guide them about the show.

“We want to make both the parents and children understand that it’s not a competition of a lifetime and that they should not take any pressure because of the show,” says Shaan, who recently lent his voice to the song ‘Lipstick laga ke’ from the movie Great ‘Grand Masti.’
