30 dogs killed, dumped in pit off Kanakapura Road

Just a day after the news of three puppies being burnt alive in Hyderabad made national headlines, here is another shocker. More than 30 stray dogs were killed and dumped in a pit in Amruth Nagar off Kanakapura Road, south Bengaluru, late on Wednesday night.

A security guard at a nearby factory on Thursday reported the incident to a local resident who in turn informed the nonprofit People For Animals (PFA). On reaching the spot, the PFA’s rescue team found one of the dogs still alive, and rushed it to the Cartman Veterinary Clinic for treatment. “It was not just a terrible sight to witness so many dogs being killed and dumped heartlessly,” said the PFA’s Animal Welfare Officer Sarat Lal A S. “Seeing a dog still alive and utterly helpless was equally horrendous.”

The dogs were culled and dumped in an eight-foot-deep pit dug up by an earthmover next to a lake. The lone surviving dog was very aggressive and it took the PFA volunteers close to half an hour to get it out of the pit. The rescued dog had deep marks around the neck which it had clearly sustained from a rope catcher, Lal said.

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials were unaware of the incident. Dr Sriram, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry Department, BBMP, said, “I am not aware of this incident. I will instruct the officials concerned to look into it.”
